Ordering & General Questions
How do I order an elevator guard? Ordering is simple through our online store. Send us your dimensions, sketches, photos, or CAD/PDF files. We’ll review the information and provide a quote, usually within 1 business day. Once approved, your guard is fabricated to size and shipped directly to you or your contractor.
Are CAD drawings required for ordering? No. Detailed CAD drawings are not required. Most customers provide basic measurements, sketches, or photos, and we translate them into digital files for fabrication. If preferred, a licensed elevator contractor can take field measurements.
Do you install the guards? No. We manufacture and ship elevator guards nationwide, but installation is typically handled by a licensed elevator contractor.
Pricing & Discounts
Do you offer contractor or volume discounts? Yes. We offer trade pricing for licensed elevator contractors and volume discounts for multi-unit orders of identical elevator guards. Discount eligibility depends on order size, product type, and project details. Because all elevator guards are custom-fabricated to order, discounts are not automatically applied online. Contractors or customers planning multi-unit installations should contact us before ordering to confirm eligibility and pricing.
Why don’t discounted prices appear automatically at checkout? Each guard is custom-made based on specific dimensions, mounting conditions, and code considerations. Contractor and volume pricing is reviewed and applied manually after order details are confirmed to ensure accuracy and fairness.
Mounting Hardware & Standoffs
Do you supply mounting hardware or standoffs? By default, we manufacture and supply the acrylic elevator guard panels only. Mounting hardware and standoffs are not included with standard orders. This allows installers to select hardware appropriate for site conditions, finishes, wall construction, and local code requirements.
Can you recommend a source for mounting hardware? Yes. Many customers source standoffs from suppliers such as MBS Standoffs or similar industrial hardware vendors offering a wide range of sizes, finishes, and load ratings. We are happy to help determine appropriate standoff size, diameter, and spacing.
Can you supply mounting hardware with my order? In some cases, yes — upon request. Because of the many variations in standoff length, diameter, finish, anchoring method, and wall construction, we do not stock mounting hardware for online checkout.
If hardware is requested:
- Installation requirements are reviewed
- Hardware may be quoted and supplied as a custom add-on when feasible
- This ensures compatibility while avoiding incorrect or unsuitable hardware selection.
Product & Code-Related Questions
What is an elevator door guard (space guard)? An elevator door guard (also called a space guard or clear baffle) is a panel installed on the hoistway door to reduce the gap between the door and the elevator platform. These guards are referenced in the ASME A17.1/A17.3 residential elevator safety standards.
What’s the difference between a full-door baffle and a half-door baffle? A full-door baffle extends across the full height of the hoistway door opening, while a half-door baffle covers only the lower portion. Full-door guards provide continuous coverage, while half-door guards address the lower section only.
Some jurisdictions or inspectors may prefer or require full-height guards. Requirements vary by elevator type, location, and local enforcement practices. Final determination should be made by the licensed elevator contractor and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Cutting Edge Plastics fabricates guards to customer-provided specifications and does not design, certify, or guarantee code compliance.
Are elevator door guards required by law? In many states, residential elevators installed before 2016 may not meet current ASME A17.1/A17.3 door gap requirements. Adding a properly sized elevator door guard is one method used by elevator professionals to address excessive door clearances and improve safety. Always consult your elevator contractor or AHJ. Materials & Customization
What material are the guards made from? Our guards are CNC-cut from high-strength clear cast acrylic (Plexiglass® / Lucite®). Typical thicknesses are ½″ or ¾″, with polished edges for a clean, professional finish.
Are other colors or materials available? Yes. While clear acrylic is most common, we can also fabricate guards from colored acrylic, Lumicor®, or 3Form® materials upon request.
