Fabricated for Residential Elevator Retrofit Applications

Elevator Door Baffles (also referred to as space guards, elevator guards, or elevator build-outs) are clear acrylic panels used in certain existing residential elevator installations to reduce door-to-cab clearance conditions as part of a retrofit or safety upgrade.

At Cutting Edge Plastics, we fabricate clear acrylic elevator door baffle panels for use in qualified residential retrofit applications, based on installer review and approval.

Important:

Elevator door baffles are fabricated based on installer-provided measurements.

For best results, measurements should be taken by a licensed elevator contractor or qualified installer using our Elevator Baffle Measurement Worksheet.

Homeowners are welcome to review this information, but final dimensions should be confirmed by the installer prior to fabrication.

Two Fabrication Options Available

Standard Half-Door Baffle Panels

For certain common residential retrofit scenarios, we offer standard half-door acrylic baffle panels with predefined dimensions, thickness, and mounting patterns.

These standard configurations are intended for:

  • Existing residential elevators
  • Retrofit applications reviewed by a qualified service provider
  • Installations where a half-door baffle configuration is appropriate

👉 Standard half-door baffles are available to order online for qualified applications.

Custom Acrylic Door Baffles

For installations that fall outside standard parameters, custom acrylic door baffles are fabricated to installer-provided specifications.

Custom panels are CNC-cut based on:

  • Field measurements
  • Drawings or sketches
  • Sizing worksheets
  • Photos provided by the service provider

For Homeowners: Understanding Elevator Door Baffles

In some existing residential elevator installations, an elevator service company or installer may identify door-to-cab clearance conditions that need to be addressed as part of a retrofit or service decision. One method sometimes specified by qualified professionals is the use of a door baffle or space guard— a clear acrylic panel mounted to the hoistway door.

Cutting Edge Plastics fabricates custom clear acrylic door baffle panels only when requested by, or at the direction of, an elevator service company, installer, or other qualified professional. We do not evaluate elevator conditions, determine suitability, or advise on code compliance. Final decisions regarding use, configuration, and acceptance rest with the installer and the local Authority Having Jurisdiction.

Our role is limited to fabrication of the acrylic component to installer-specified dimensions based on measurements, drawings, or sizing worksheets provided by the service provider. Installation, application, and approval are handled entirely by others.

  • Fabricated from clear cast acrylic
  • CNC-cut to installer-specified dimensions
  • Custom fabrication only — no stock sizes
  • Fabrication of acrylic components only Installation and acceptability determined by the service provider and AHJ.

For Contractors: Fabrication Support for Residential Elevator Door Baffles & SPACE GUARDS

If you work with existing residential elevators, you’re familiar with how door-to-cab clearance conditions are sometimes addressed differently depending on installation type, jurisdiction, and inspector interpretation. In certain retrofit situations on existing residential elevators, a door baffle or space guard may be specified by the installer or service company.

Cutting Edge Plastics provides fabrication support only, specializing in custom CNC-cut clear acrylic door baffle panels and guard panels fabricated to installer-specified dimensions. We do not evaluate elevator conditions, determine applicability, or advise on code compliance. Final decisions regarding use, configuration, and acceptance rest with the installer and the local Authority Having Jurisdiction.

Our role is to deliver consistent, repeatable acrylic components based on measurements, drawings, photos, or sizing worksheets provided by qualified professionals — helping streamline fabrication without adding design or compliance burden.

* Durable 3/8" or ½" cast acrylic

* CAM-programmed and CNC routed for precision

* Sanded and polished edges

* Repeatable jobs saved for fast reordering

Panels are fabricated and shipped for use on existing residential elevator retrofit applications, as directed by the service provider.

Also Referred to as Elevator Door Build-Outs

In some residential elevator service companies, elevator door baffles may be referred to as door build-outs or elevator build-out panels. While terminology varies by company and region, these clear acrylic panels serve the same purpose in certain residential retrofit applications — reducing door-to-cab clearance conditions as determined by the installer and Authority Having Jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ordering & General Questions

What is an elevator baffle? An elevator door baffle (sometimes called a space guard or door guard) is a clear acrylic panel mounted to the hoistway door in certain existing residential elevator installations. These panels are used in retrofit applications where door-to-cab clearances are addressed by the installer and AHJ.

How do I order an elevator baffle? Orders are placed through our online store or by contacting us directly. Fabrication is typically initiated by, or at the direction of, a licensed elevator service company or installer. We fabricate acrylic door baffle panels based on dimensions, sketches, photos, or CAD/PDF files provided by the service provider. Once details are confirmed, the acrylic component is fabricated to order and shipped.

Are CAD drawings required for ordering? No. CAD drawings are not required. Most orders are fabricated using basic measurements, sketches, photos, or sizing worksheets provided by the installer or service company. If preferred, a licensed elevator contractor may take field measurements and supply drawings.

Do you install the elevator door baffles? No. Cutting Edge Plastics is a fabricator only. We manufacture and ship custom acrylic door baffle panels nationwide. Installation, application, and approval are handled by a licensed elevator contractor or service provider.

Pricing & Discounts

Do you offer contractor or volume discounts? Yes. Trade pricing is available for licensed elevator contractors, and volume pricing may be available for multiple identical panels. Because all panels are custom fabricated to order, discounts are reviewed and applied manually after order details are confirmed.

Why don’t discounted prices appear automatically at checkout? Each panel is fabricated based on installer-specified dimensions and project details. Contractor and volume pricing is reviewed manually to ensure accuracy and consistency before fabrication begins.

Mounting Hardware & Standoffs

Do you supply mounting hardware or standoffs? By default, we manufacture and supply the acrylic elevator guard panels only. Mounting hardware and standoffs are not included with standard orders. This allows installers to select hardware appropriate for site conditions, finishes, wall construction, and local requirements.

Can you recommend a source for mounting hardware? Yes. Many customers source standoffs from suppliers such as MBS Standoffs or similar industrial hardware vendors offering a wide range of sizes, finishes, and load ratings.

Can you supply mounting hardware with my order? In some cases, yes — upon request. Because of the many variations in standoff length, diameter, finish, anchoring method, and wall construction, we do not stock mounting hardware for online checkout.

If hardware is requested:

- Installation requirements are reviewed

- Hardware may be quoted and supplied as a custom add-on when feasible

- This ensures compatibility while avoiding incorrect or unsuitable hardware selection.

Product & Code-Related Questions

What is an elevator door baffle (space baffle)? An elevator door baffle is a clear acrylic panel mounted to the hoistway door in certain existing residential elevator installations. Door baffles are referenced in ASME A17.1 and A17.3 in the context of addressing door-to-cab clearance conditions. Acceptance and configuration vary by jurisdiction and installation.

What’s the difference between a full-door baffle and a half-door baffle? A full-door baffle extends across the full height of the hoistway door opening. A half-door baffle covers only the lower portion of the door. Use of either configuration depends on installation type, jurisdiction, inspector interpretation, and service company practice. Final determination is made by the installer and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Does Cutting Edge Plastics determine code compliance? No. We fabricate acrylic components only. Code interpretation and acceptance rest with the installer and AHJ.

Are elevator door baffles required by law? Requirements vary by jurisdiction and installation type. Always consult a licensed elevator professional and the local AHJ.

Materials & Customization

What material are the panels made from? Our panels are CNC-cut from clear cast acrylic (Plexiglass / Lucite). Typical thicknesses are 3/8" or 1/2", with polished edges for a clean, professional finish.

Are other colors or materials available? Yes. In addition to clear acrylic, panels can be fabricated from colored acrylic or specialty decorative materials upon request, subject to availability.
