Ordering & General Questions
What is an elevator baffle? An elevator door baffle (sometimes called a space guard or door guard) is a clear acrylic panel mounted to the hoistway door in certain existing residential elevator installations. These panels are used in retrofit applications where door-to-cab clearances are addressed by the installer and AHJ.
How do I order an elevator baffle? Orders are placed through our online store or by contacting us directly. Fabrication is typically initiated by, or at the direction of, a licensed elevator service company or installer. We fabricate acrylic door baffle panels based on dimensions, sketches, photos, or CAD/PDF files provided by the service provider. Once details are confirmed, the acrylic component is fabricated to order and shipped.
Are CAD drawings required for ordering? No. CAD drawings are not required. Most orders are fabricated using basic measurements, sketches, photos, or sizing worksheets provided by the installer or service company. If preferred, a licensed elevator contractor may take field measurements and supply drawings.
Do you install the elevator door baffles? No. Cutting Edge Plastics is a fabricator only. We manufacture and ship custom acrylic door baffle panels nationwide. Installation, application, and approval are handled by a licensed elevator contractor or service provider.
Pricing & Discounts
Do you offer contractor or volume discounts? Yes. Trade pricing is available for licensed elevator contractors, and volume pricing may be available for multiple identical panels. Because all panels are custom fabricated to order, discounts are reviewed and applied manually after order details are confirmed.
Why don’t discounted prices appear automatically at checkout? Each panel is fabricated based on installer-specified dimensions and project details. Contractor and volume pricing is reviewed manually to ensure accuracy and consistency before fabrication begins.
Mounting Hardware & Standoffs
Do you supply mounting hardware or standoffs? By default, we manufacture and supply the acrylic elevator guard panels only. Mounting hardware and standoffs are not included with standard orders. This allows installers to select hardware appropriate for site conditions, finishes, wall construction, and local requirements.
Can you recommend a source for mounting hardware? Yes. Many customers source standoffs from suppliers such as MBS Standoffs or similar industrial hardware vendors offering a wide range of sizes, finishes, and load ratings.
Can you supply mounting hardware with my order? In some cases, yes — upon request. Because of the many variations in standoff length, diameter, finish, anchoring method, and wall construction, we do not stock mounting hardware for online checkout.
If hardware is requested:
- Installation requirements are reviewed
- Hardware may be quoted and supplied as a custom add-on when feasible
- This ensures compatibility while avoiding incorrect or unsuitable hardware selection.
Product & Code-Related Questions
What is an elevator door baffle (space baffle)? An elevator door baffle is a clear acrylic panel mounted to the hoistway door in certain existing residential elevator installations. Door baffles are referenced in ASME A17.1 and A17.3 in the context of addressing door-to-cab clearance conditions. Acceptance and configuration vary by jurisdiction and installation.
What’s the difference between a full-door baffle and a half-door baffle? A full-door baffle extends across the full height of the hoistway door opening. A half-door baffle covers only the lower portion of the door. Use of either configuration depends on installation type, jurisdiction, inspector interpretation, and service company practice. Final determination is made by the installer and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Does Cutting Edge Plastics determine code compliance? No. We fabricate acrylic components only. Code interpretation and acceptance rest with the installer and AHJ.
Are elevator door baffles required by law? Requirements vary by jurisdiction and installation type. Always consult a licensed elevator professional and the local AHJ.
Materials & Customization
What material are the panels made from? Our panels are CNC-cut from clear cast acrylic (Plexiglass / Lucite). Typical thicknesses are 3/8" or 1/2", with polished edges for a clean, professional finish.
Are other colors or materials available? Yes. In addition to clear acrylic, panels can be fabricated from colored acrylic or specialty decorative materials upon request, subject to availability.
